Mountain law 2021: Var

From November 1, 2021 , you will need to have specific winter equipment in certain departments . 48 departments are concerned, including Var and some of its municipalities . Discover the Mountain law and what will change for you from November 1st.

WHAT IS MOUNTAIN LAW?

There Mountain law 2 , or, law for the modernization, development and protection of mountain territories , makes it compulsory to use special equipment to travel in certain mountain areas between November 1 and March 31. Motorists will therefore need to equip themselves with snow tires or removable anti-slip devices.

WHICH COMMUNITIES IN THE VAR ARE CONCERNED BY THE MONTAGNE 2 LAW?

Var is one of the 48 departments affected by the new Mountain law. The prefects subsequently established a list of municipalities to be included or excluded. In total, 28 municipalities will make the use of special equipment compulsory:

Needles
Ampus
Artignosc-sur-Verdon
Aups
Bargemon
Bargème
Baudinard-sur-Verdon
Bauduen
Brenon
Châteaudouble
Châteauvieux
Comps-sur-Artuby
The Bastide
The Marten
La Roque-Esclapon
La Verdière
Le Bourguet
Les Salles-sur-Verdon
Moissac-Bellevue
Mons
Montferrat
Montmeyan
Regusse
Saint-Julien-le-Montagnier
Seillans
Tourtour
Trigance
Verignon

These municipalities will install the new B58 sign which will indicate “entry into the equipment obligation zone during the winter period”.

WHAT EQUIPMENT WILL YOU NEED TO HAVE TO MOVE IN THE VAR?

In order to be able to drive with complete peace of mind in the Var , you have the choice between several solutions:

    • winter tires on all four wheels , 3PMSF certified (3 Peak Mountain Snow Flake) or at least M + S certified . Please note, the mention M + S (for Mud and Snow) will only be tolerated until November 1, 2024;
    • 4-season tires on all four wheels , 3PMSF approved
    • at least one pair of snow chains on both drive wheels
    • at least one pair of snow socks on both drive wheels.

Obviously, the equipment you choose must meet your needs. If you drive very often in the mountains, then it will be wiser to choose approved tires. Conversely, if you only go to the mountains occasionally, it is more economical to turn to removable equipment such as snow chains or snow socks , the installation and cost of winter tires can be relatively pupil.

WHAT IS THE RISK IN THE EVENT OF AN INFRINGEMENT?

Any vehicle traveling without adequate equipment in an area covered by the Mountain law risks a 4th class fine of €135 as well as immobilization of the vehicle.
